Bolette Søborg
Bolette is 42 years old and a trained medical doctor (MD) currently working as a researcher in the Department of Epidemiology, Division for Epidemiology.
My interest in Infectious Diseases brought me to SSI in 2004. Before that, I had become familiar with SSI via my colleagues at the Department of Infectious Diseases, Copenhagen University Hospital at Rigshospitalet, where I worked as a fellow in 2003. I also new of SSI from my MD student years, because I worked together with collaborating partners at the International Reference Laboratory of Mycobacteriology, when doing my MD Master project ( OSVAL II) on tuberculosis in Greenland.

Markedly different working at SSI
Working at SSI is markedly different than practicing medicine. Not only because we work daytime, which is a bit of a luxury, but also because we have less proximity to patients. MD’s at the SSI stay in contact with the hospital life through daily consultation in the laboratory to fellow MD’s at the hospitals – often in combination with research.
At SSI, I worked for a period as a resident in the International Reference Laboratory of Mycobacteriology, but I have primarily focused on writing a PhD thesis and doing research. After handing in my PhD thesis, I have continued working as a researcher in the Department of Epidemiology. My area of interest is in Infectious diseases and epidemiology. Through my research at SSI, I have maintained clinical contact via field work. My researchs brought me to Greenland ten times and I have examined, more than 2,000 Greenlandic children in connection with my studies – incredibly exciting work.
SSI is an incredible amount of expertise on which to draw, when you are new in the field
Inspiring to work in an inter-professional research environment
What characterises working at SSI as an MD is the high degree of inter-professionalism. We work across departments, and across professions. There are many talented people here and lots of academics as potential partners for future research projects.
As a research institute, SSI enjoys a high profile. Within epidemiological research, where I work, SSI is world class. At the SSI there is an incredible amount of expertise on which to draw when you are new in the field. The SSI expertise is also internationally renowned, which facilitates good international networks and excellent opportunities for making presentations at international conferences.
The research environment at SSI is a very inspiring place to work. There is a great deal of freedom, good sparring and healthy competition. As a result, the workplace is very dynamic with innovative people.
