SSI and Its Neighbourhood
In 1902, when Statens Serum Institut (SSI) was founded it lay between natural resorts and military areas. This meant that SSI did not have many neighbours to consider. However, since then neighbouring areas such as Sundbyerne and Bryggen have been expanded, and today, SSI has neighbours on all sides. SSI’s neighbours include residences, day-care centres, service trades and a school.
The fact that SSI’s immediate neighbours include residences and day-care centres means that in particular the noise from SSI’s activities is subjected to extensive restrictions; as an example noise in areas leading up to residential areas must not exceed 40 dB(A) during evening and nighttime hours which equals the level of noise produced by a modern dishwasher. SSI is also subjected to restrictions regarding reduction of release of obnoxious smells and filtration of air from production facilities and certain laboratories.
If you are a neighbour to SSI, this means that you are neighbour to a very secure and well-regulated company.
However, if you experience odor problems from SSI despite our best efforts to prevent it, please contact the Environmental Health and Safety Department at SSI (In Danish “Afdelingen for Miljø og Sikkerhed”).
