Salmonella antisera H:f,g, H:g,m, H:g,p, H:l,v and H:l,w will be discontinued from January 2012.

SSI Diagnostica has decided to discontinue five of our Salmonella H antisera which have caused misinterpretations of the use and of the results of the serotyping. The antisera concerned are H:f,g, H:g,m, H:g,p, H:l,v and H:l,w. We can offer alternative antisera for all five products which are better in terms of a more clear serotyping result. The following text explains why the products are phased out and which alternative products we offer in order to obtain proper serotyping results. We still have stock of the discontinued antisera, but once we are out of stock, we will not be able to supply them anymore.

Salmonella H antisera

H:f,g (art no 53826):

It is sometimes assumed that antiserum H:f,g reacts with all H:f and H:g combinations, but this is not the case. When the antiserum is produced, the antibody level is measured only by using strains expressing the phase H:f,g, H:f,g,s and H:f,g,t. We accept other antibody combinations with H:g (for example H:g,m) in the antiserum but we do not (and cannot) remove these antibodies from the antiserum since it also will remove the antibodies that reacts with antigen combination H:f,g, H:f,g,s and H:f,g,t. Therefore, a positive reaction with antiserum H:f,g does not necessarily means that the strain expresses a H:f,g phase, it could for example be a H:g,m phase.

Antiserum H:f,g is not suggested by “Guidelines for the preparation of Salmonella antisera”, Institut Pasteur, France.

Alternative products: In order to determine a H:f,g phase use first antiserum H:G (art. no. 40299) which agglutinates with all H:g combinations (and H:m,t) and subsequently factor antisera H:f (art. no. 40331). Depending on the O serotyping test also the phase with antiserum H:t (art. no. 40336), H:m (art. no. 40332) and H:s (art. no. 40335) as antigen combinations as H:f,g,t, H:f,g,m,t and H:f,g,s also exist.

H:g,m (art no 23851):

It is sometimes assumed that antiserum H:g,m reacts with all H:g and H:m combinations, but this is not the case. When the antiserum is produced, the antibody level is measured only by using strains expressing the phase H:g,m. We accept other antibody combinations with H:g or H:m (for example H:f,g or H:m,t) in the antiserum but we do not (and cannot) remove these antibodies from the antiserum since it also will remove the antibodies that reacts with antigen combination H:g,m. Therefore, a positive reaction with antiserum H:g,m does not necessarily means that the strain expresses a H:g,m phase, it could for example be a H:f,g or a H:m,t phase.

Alternative products: In order to determine a H:g,m phase use first antiserum H:G (art. no. 40299) which agglutinates with all H:g combinations (and H:m,t) and subsequently factor antisera H:m (art. no. 40332). Depending on the O serotyping test also the phase with antiserum H:f (art. no. 40331), H:t (art. no. 40336), H:p (art. no. 40333), H:s (art. no. 40335) and H:q (art. no. 40334) as antigen combinations as H:f,g,m,t, H:g,m,t, H:g,m,s, H:g,m,s,t, H:g,m,p,s and H:g,m,q also exist.

H:g,p (art no 40302):

Antiserum H:g,p reacts with all H:g combinations (but not H:m,t as for antiserum H:G). Therefore, a positive reaction with antiserum H:g,p does not necessarily means that the strain expresses the antigens H:g,p, it could for example be a H:g,s,t or a H:g,m phase.

Alternative products: In order to determine a H:g,p phase use first antiserum H:G (art. no. 40299) which agglutinates with all H:g combinations (and H:m,t) and subsequently factor antisera H:p (art. no. 40333). Depending on the O serotyping test also the phase with antiserum H:s (art. no. 40335) and H:u (art. no. 40337) as the antigen combinations H:g,p,s and H:g,p,u also exist.

H:l,v (art no 53829):

It is sometimes assumed that antiserum H:l,v reacts with all H:l combinations, but this is not the case. When the antiserum is produced, the antibody level is measured only by using strains expressing the phase H:l,v. We accept other antibody combinations with H:l (for example H:l,w or H:l,z13) in the antiserum but we do not (and cannot) remove these antibodies from the antiserum since it also will remove the antibodies that reacts with antigen combination H:l,v. Therefore, a positive reaction with antiserum H:l,v does not necessarily means that the strain expresses a H:l,v phase, it could for example be a H:l,w or a H:l,z13,z28 phase.

Antiserum H:l,v is not suggested by “Guidelines for the preparation of Salmonella antisera”, Institut Pasteur, France.

Alternative products: In order to determine a H:l,v phase use first antiserum H:L (art. no. 40297) which agglutinates with all H:l combinations and subsequently factor antisera H:v (art. no. 40338).

H:l,w (art no 53830):

It is sometimes assumed that antiserum H:l,w reacts with all H:l combinations, but this is not the case. When the antiserum is produced, the antibody level is measured only by using strains expressing the phase H:l,w. We accept other antibody combinations with H:l (for example H:l,v or H:l,z40) in the antiserum but we do not (and cannot) remove these antibodies from the antiserum since it also will remove the antibodies that reacts with antigen combination H:l,w. Therefore, a positive reaction with antiserum H:l,w does not necessarily means that the strain expresses a H:l,w phase, it could for example be a H:l,v or a H:l,z40 phase.

Antiserum H:l,w is not suggested by “Guidelines for the preparation of Salmonella antisera”, Institut Pasteur, France.

Alternative products: In order to determine a H:l,w phase use first antiserum H:L (art. no. 40297) which agglutinates with all H:l combinations and subsequently factor antisera H:w (art. no. 40339).
