Bordetella Pertussis produces the pertussis toxin (PT), which causes the infectious disease pertussis in humans. Pertussis is not just a childhood disease but is frequent among adolescents and adults. Child vaccinations do not provide life-long protection against pertussis. Adults with pertussis are the major source of infection to infants.

PT is used as antigen in an ELISA for detection of anti-IgG antibodies against PT in adolescents and adults.
