Research Strategy
Research and development at a high international level are important for ensuring effective prevention and control of infectious diseases and for further developing SSI's business activities.
Statens Serum Institut has many years experience in prevention and control of infectious diseases and congenital disorders.

Within the Institute's core competencies - microbiology, immunology and epidemiology - research must be of such a high technical quality, that Statens Serum Institut:
- remains an internationally recognized research institution
- remains a leading national and international supplier and provider of data and knowledge
- contributes to the generation of knowledge to disease control and diagnostics
In order to optimize research and development effort in the years 2010-2013, special attention will be on the following areas:
- Diagnosis and surveillance of infectious diseases including gastrointestinal infections, respiratory infections, resistance to antibiotics, hospital infections and antiviral resistance
Diagnosis and prevention of congenital diseases including biochemical, chemical and genetic disease markers
- Vaccines including tuberculosis, Chlamydia and HIV as well as adjuvant systems
- Epidemiological research focusing on infectious diseases, the effect of vaccines, causes of cancer diseases and diseases related to pre-natal or neo-natal life
