Statens Serum Institut vaccine production business sold to AJ Vaccines Holding ApS

Statens Serum Institut (SSI) has completed the carve out of its vaccine production business to AJ Vaccines A/S and divested all its shares to AJ Vaccines Holding ApS. As of today, AJ Vaccines A/S will continue to produce vaccines against e.g. polio and tuberculosis on SSI’s premises on Amager (Copenhagen). Statens Serum Institut, under the auspices of the Ministry of Health, will continue to be responsible for ensuring the supply of vaccines to the Danish vaccination programmes.

More than 500 employees at Statens Serum Institut will be changing employer today. AJ Vaccines A/S has taken over SSI’s vaccine production business, including related assets, marketing approvals and employees. AJ Vaccines A/S will continue the production from facilities on SSI’s premises in Copenhagen, including vaccines against viral and bacterial diseases. The pertinent vaccines include, among others, vaccines against tuberculosis, polio, diphtheria, tetanus and whooping cough.

The signing of the share transfer agreement was finalised and announced in June 2016. Prior to the completion of transfer of ownership, an extensive carve out and transfer process was carried out, including the development of several new standalone IT systems.
Statens Serum Institut continues to be responsible for ensuring the supply, now via purchase, of vaccines for the Danish Childhood Vaccination Programme, pandemic preparedness and other necessary preparedness supplies.

In order to ensure continuity in the Childhood Vaccination Programme, an agreement has been reached with the buyer of SSI’s vaccine production to supply vaccines for the Childhood Vaccination Programme during a transition period of 30 months.  A bidding round to be initiated in the first half of 2017 will determine which company will subsequently supply vaccines for this programme.
