PhD fellowship in Discovery of novel natural antimicrobials

Ansøgningsfrist: 31. december 2017

Background
The EC, UK government and research councils have recognised the need for new and novel acting antibiotics. Combatting Antimicrobial Resistance Training Network (CARTNET) is a European Marie Sklodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network. CARTNET will train in development of new intervention strategies covering design of antimicrobials to already known targets, discovery of new, natural antimicrobials as well as in alternative therapies employing for example bacteriophages.

Project description
The PhD fellowship at Statens Serum Institut is one of 10 fellowships across Europe. This fellowship involves identifying candidate species from both human and animal hosts that produce antibacterials against pathogens such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Streptococcus suis.

The project will be based on characterization of microbial communities from both humans and animals and possibly the environment. Recent studies indicate that human microbial communities often have species that prevent pathogens either by competing for same nutrients or by producing secondary metabolites that target other bacteria. In order to identify such species and their products various microbial communities will be characterized using metagenomics, 16S rRNA based methods as well as more species and subspecies targeting methods complementing whole genome sequence data. The project is thus a combination of using the current wealth of genomic data, applied bioinformatics and laboratory characterization to identify bacteria that potentially generate specific antibacterials that prevent or kill MRSA or S. suis.

Required qualifications
You are a biologist or bioinformatician by training (M.Sc.) and experienced with R-programming or other types of programming, statistics, and handling large and complex data sets.

You should also have laboratory experience in microbiology.

You are an enthusiastic, innovative and open-minded person with a strong interest in combining bioinformatics and microbiology data to understand diversity and interactions.

You are adventurous, independent and not afraid of new challenges in a different country. You have excellent cooperation and communication skills and are able to apply theory to practice.

You are able to work in a young and dynamic team that are involved in multiple projects all within the field of microbial genomics and microbiomics.

Inspiring colleagues and flexible working conditions
The fellowship will be hosted at the Department for Bacteria, Parasites and Fungi at Statens Serum Institut, Copenhagen, Denmark. Part of the fellowship will include 3-months secondments at University of Warwick, UK and Schothorst Feed Research, The Netherlands.
