A large international research collaboration involving a Danish research group at Statens Serum Institut has identified 30 genes with a role in determining when girls have their first menstrual period. The results have been published in Nature Genetics.

Drugs against heartburn do not increase risk of birth defects

Researchers from the Department of Epidemiology Research at Statens Serum Institut report that pregnant women's use of proton-pump inhibitors, drugs used in the treatment of gastro-esophageal reflux and gastric ulcers, was not associated with an increased risk of birth defects. The main conclusion of the study, published on November 25 in the New England Journal of Medicine, was that proton-pump inhibitors can be used relatively safely in the first trimester of pregnancy.
