The influenza season 2009-2010 was atypical and characterised by the new pandemic influenza virus H1N1 which spread globally as from the spring of 2009. The new influenza A H1N1 virus is expected to dominate the next influenza season.
On the basis of the strains in circulation, the WHO recommends that the vaccine composition for the next (2010-2011) season be changed to the following:
- A/California/7/2009 (H1N1)-like vi-rus
- A/Perth/16/2009 (H3N2)-like virus
- B/Brisbane/60/2008-like virus.
